Trek For A Cause is a challenging trek, usually into the high mountains. In 2014, TFAC will journey to the Everest Base Camp, Nepal from 12th September to 30th September. The journey will traverse over 100km of mountainous terrain in the Himalayas, reaching an altitude of 5364m (17598ft) at the EBC.
Trek For A Cause also aims to raise awareness and funds for the education of underprivileged children in Malaysia.
What the funds will be used for
The funds raised via TFAC will be used to help underprivileged children meet their basic needs in the pursuit of education. Funds will be used to pay for books, teachers, teaching materials, clothing, nutrition and extra-curricular activities for the children. The main beneficiaries will be:
- the Orang Asli communities in Peninsular Malaysia
- Bajau Laut communities on the islands off the east coast of Sabah
- Refugee children, mostly scattered in the Klang Valley
For example, there are close to 29,000 refugee children registered with UNHCR Malaysia, of which 17,000 are of school-going age. Less than half of them have any access to any kind of education. Many Orang Asli children and orphans struggle to go to school because their parents lack the means. A large number of stateless children in the islands of the east coast of Sabah lack access to school – they loiter and beg in the streets.
Administration of the funds raised in 2013
The funds will be administrated by Yayasan Kemanusiaan Muslim Aid (Muslim Aid). Muslim Aid is a non-political and non-sectarian aid agency, inspired by Islamic values, to serve the most needy, irrespective of religion, race, ethnicity, nationality or political creed. In 2013, the TFAC raised about 100,000. The funds have (and are being) used for:
(a) Mobile library programme for Orang Asli communities
(b) A learning centre in Ampang, catering for the Myanmar refugee children
About MY Team
My Team is a group of amateur trekking enthusiasts. Their previous major expeditions were to the Everest Base Camp in 2011 and the Annapurna Circuit in 2013. Besides enjoying what they do, the MY Team aims to contribute to society in any way possible. Anyone can be a member of MY Team.
(Note: All members of MY Team pay for all their own expenses. 100% of all funds raised go to the Muslim Aid education programme).
About Muslim Aid
Muslim Aid was officially established in 2004 in Malaysia to provide a platform for Malaysians to join the world community in tackling the persistent problems of poverty and sufferings as a result of natural (e.g. flood, earthquake) and man-made disasters (e.g. endemic poverty, civil strife, wars).
In 2008, Yayasan Kemanusiaan Muslim Aid Malaysia was established to concentrate on delivering aid within the country.
Among the recipient communities are refugees in Malaysia, the Orang Asli, single mother, poor children and orphans. All donations to Muslim Aid are tax-exempt (LHDN 01/35/42/51/179-6.6487).
