Education Equality for All

Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world. (Nelson Mandela)

Given the evident benefits of education, why do so many children in so many countries fail to get one? This is a challenge that Muslim Aid takes head on.

Mull over these:

  • 125 million children, mostly girls, do not attend school and a further 150 million drop out before they can even read or write.
  • 75 million children will be deprived of basic education if steps are not taken immediately

Cost is one obvious reason why children do not get education, given that poor families must meet their essential needs – food and shelter – first. Therefore, parents may prefer that their children work to supplement household income, do household chores or care for sick family members.

Another reason to ponder: many children who do attend school receive an inadequate education because of poorly trained, underpaid teachers, overcrowded classrooms and a lack of basic tools such as textbooks, blackboard, even chalk, pencil and paper.

Educational programmes are implemented in: Malaysia, Indonesia, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Palestine, Bangladesh, Cambodia, and Afghanistan.
